About Us

Sargent Church of Christ, an independent Christian Church, is dedicated to following God's word as written in the Bible and spreading the message of Christ's love and compassion. Our mission is to foster knowledge and understanding of the Bible across the age spectrum and to live out the Biblical Truths of God's Word. We believe in baptism by immersion and weekly communion in remembrance of Jesus's ultimate sacrifice for our sins. Welcome to our church!

Our Beliefs

We are a congregation with roots in the Restoration (Stone-Campbell) Movement of the 19th century. The Restoration Movement elevates the teachings of Jesus Christ and the Bible over human traditions and teachings. Our guiding principles express the belief “that the Church of Christ upon earth is essentially, intentionally, and constitutionally one; the acceptance of no creed but Christ; that the Holy Scriptures make up a perfect constitution for the worship, discipline, and government of the New Testament Church; and concerning doctrinal and

theological matters we adopt the slogan, ‘Where scripture speaks, let us speak; where scripture is silent, let us be silent.’”

WHAT WE BELIEVE

God

There is one eternally existing God who exists in three distinct persons: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. He is creator and ruler of the universe. God is perfect in love power, holiness, goodness, knowledge, wisdom, justice, and mercy.

(Genesis 1:1, 26-27, 3:22; Psalm 90:2; Matthew 28:19, 2 Corinthians 13:14; I Peter 1:2)

Jesus

Jesus is the Son of God, co-equal with the Father, and the only way to Heaven. Jesus was born

of a virgin, lived a sinless human life and offered Himself as the perfect sacrifice for the sins of

all people by dying on the cross. He defeated death three days later by rising from the dead

demonstrating His power over sin and death. Jesus ascended into heaven and will return again

someday to claim His own and spend eternity with them.

(Isaiah 9:6; Matthew 1:22-23; John 1:1-5; 14:6; 14:10-13; Acts 1:9-11; 4:12; 1 Corinthians

15:3-4; Romans 1:3-4; 1 Timothy 6:14-15; Titus 2:13; Hebrews 4:14-15)

Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit is co-equal with the Father and the Son of God. He is present in the world to

make people aware of their need for Jesus Christ. He lives in every Christian from the moment

of salvation. He provides the Christian with power of living, understanding of spiritual truth, and

guidance in doing what is right. As Christians we seek to live under His control daily.

(John 14:16-17; 16:7-13; Acts 1:8; 2:38-39; Romans 8:26-27; 1 Corinthians 2:12; 3:16; 2

Corinthians 3:17; Galatians 5:25; Ephesians 1:13; 5-18;)

Bible

The Bible is the inspired, inerrant, infallible, and authoritative word of God. It is written by human

authors under the supernatural guidance of the Holy Spirit and is without error. It is the final and

only authority of truth and revelation for all people.

(Psalm 12:6; 119:105; 160; Proverbs 30:5; 2 Timothy 1:13; 3:16; Hebrews 4:12; 2 Peter

1:20-21)

Sin

We believe all people are created in the image of God and have tremendous potential for good,

but we are all marred by an attitude of disobedience toward God called sin. As a result of our

sin, we have a shattered and broken relationship with God that can only be made whole through

Jesus Christ.

(Genesis 1:27; Psalm 8:3-6; Isaiah 53:6a; 59:1-2; Romans 3:23)

Salvation

Salvation is God's free gift (grace) given to us by faith, but we must accept it by acknowledging

Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior (confessing); turning from our sinful lifestyle (repentance); being

baptized (immersion) for the forgiveness of our sins; and living a transformed life. We can never

make up for our sin by self-improvement or good works.

(Matthew 28:19-20; Mark 1:9-11; 16:15-16; John 1:12; 3:3-5; 3:16; 14:6; Acts 2:38-39; 8:26-40;

9:17-19; 10:47-48; 16:15; 16:29-33; 17:30; 22:16; Romans 5:1; 6:23; 6:3-4; 10:10; 1 Corinthians

12:13; Galatians 3:26-27; Ephesians 2:8-9; 5:25-27; Philippians 2:12; Colossians 2:11-13; Titus

3:5; 1 Peter 3:21; 2 Peter 3:9)

Baptism

The immersion in water of a repentant believer for the forgiveness of sins and the gift of the

Holy Spirit. Baptism symbolizes the death, burial and resurrection of Christ as well as our death

to sin. Burial with Christ and resurrection into new life with him

(Acts 2:38, 8:9-40, 16:13-34; Romans 6:1-11; Galatians 3:26-28; 1 Peter 3:21)

Marriage, Gender, and Sexuality

Marriage has only one meaning: the union of one man and one woman in a single, exclusive

union, as defined in Scripture. God intends sexual intimacy to occur only between a man and a

woman, who are married to each other. God has commanded that no sexual activity be

engaged in outside of marriage.

(Genesis 2:18-25, 1 Corinthians 6:18 & 7:2-5, Hebrews 13:4)

God wonderfully and immutably creates each person as male or female in His image. Rejecting

one’s biological gender is rejecting the image of God within that person.

(Genesis 1:26-27)

Any form of sexual immorality (adultery, fornication, homosexual behavior, bisexual behavior,

trangenderism, bestiality, incest, and the use of pornography) is sinful and offensive to God.

(Matthew 15:18-20, 1 Corinthians 6:9-10)

Every person must be afforded compassion, love, kindness, respect and dignity. Hateful and

harassing behavior, attitudes directed towards any individual, are to be repudiated and will not

be tolerated.

(Mark 12:28-31, Luke 6:31)

God offers redemption and restoration to all who confess and forsake their sin, seeking His

mercy and forgiveness through Jesus Christ.

(Acts 3:19-21, Romans 10:9-10, 1 Corinthians 6:9-11)

The Church

The Church is meant to be the visible body of Christ, sent into the world to glorify God and

proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ. We affirm the priesthood of all believers and the importance

of every Christian being joined with and actively involved in fellowship with one another.

(Matthew 28:18-20; Acts 2:42-47; Ephesians 4:1-16, 1 Peter 2:9-10)

Communion

We observe communion, the Lord’s Supper, every Sunday. In the New Testament, we read that

the early church met on the first day of the week to partake of the bread and the fruit of the vine

in remembrance of the Lord Jesus.

(Acts 2:42, Acts 20:7, 1 Corinthians 11:20, 1 Corinthians 11:28)
